The Best Used Small Vans for Business

A small van is a working tool, and a used one has usually worked hard. These are the car-derived vans our inspectors trust most — and the faults that come with a life of city deliveries.

The short version

  • Small vans live hard urban lives, so the dominant faults are diesel particulate filters, clutches and tired rear suspension.
  • Stop-start city delivery work clogs the particulate filter and wears the clutch and flywheel fastest.
  • Service history matters most of all, given high commercial mileage.
  • Each model links to the versions we inspect; have the specific van checked before you buy.

A small van is bought to earn its keep, and that changes how you should judge a used one. These vehicles spend their lives in stop-start city delivery work, often loaded, often driven hard and rarely pampered, so a used van has usually worked harder for its mileage than an equivalent car. The reward for choosing well is a cheap, practical workhorse; the risk of choosing badly is inheriting the wear of someone else's business.

This guide ranks the car-derived vans our inspectors are happy to recommend, judged on durability, the cost of the parts that fail, and how clearly the faults of a working life show up on inspection. Across the whole class the same issues dominate, because they share the same cause — short urban trips and heavy use — and the inspection is built to find them.

How we chose these small vans

We scored each van on the reliability of its drivetrain under commercial use, the cost and availability of parts, and how readily the wear of a working life reveals itself on a road test and an underbody check. We favoured the platforms with cheap, plentiful parts and well-understood weak points, because a working van needs to be quick and affordable to keep on the road.

Above all we weighted service history. A van that has covered high mileage in city delivery work can still be a sound buy if it has been serviced on time, but a patchy record on a hard-worked vehicle is a real warning. The inspection reads that history alongside the physical evidence of how the van has lived.

The used small vans we rate most highly

1

Citroën Berlingo

Huge, cheap and practical, with affordable PSA running gear. The diesel particulate filter is the headline check on city-driven vans, along with clutch and turbo wear, and we confirm any recall work was completed.

2

Volkswagen Caddy

The best-built and most car-like of the group, holding its value well. We check the diesel particulate filter and oil dilution on short-trip vans, and the dry-clutch DSG for jerky shifts where fitted.

3

Ford Tourneo Connect

Car-like to drive with a strong parts network. The EcoBlue diesel's particulate filter and oil dilution are the priorities, so we verify the oil-change and cambelt history, and check the clutch.

4

Renault Kangoo

Roomy and inexpensive, with an economical, durable 1.5 dCi when serviced. The clutch wears early under loaded work use, and we check the injectors, recirculation valve and the sometimes-sensitive electrics.

5

Fiat Doblo

The cheapest here with the biggest load space, and a willing 1.6 MultiJet diesel. We check the particulate filter, which can clog early in urban use, and the clutch and dual-mass flywheel for stop-start wear.

6

Toyota Proace City Verso

A rebadged Berlingo with Toyota's long warranty when bought young — but note it shares the PSA platform rather than traditional Toyota mechanicals. We check the diesel particulate filter and the recirculation valve.

The checks that matter most on a used van

Almost every fault on a used diesel van traces back to the same root cause: short city trips that never let the engine get properly hot. The diesel particulate filter cannot complete its regeneration on stop-start delivery routes, so it clogs, triggers warning lights and eventually limp mode. We scan the soot load and regeneration history and, on a long enough drive, look for a completed regeneration rather than a permanent warning. The same short-trip use coats the exhaust-recirculation valve in carbon.

The clutch and dual-mass flywheel are the next priority, because constant stop-start driving under load wears them faster than any other use. We listen for the flywheel rattle at idle that changes when the clutch is pressed, and feel for clutch judder pulling away. Finally we check the rear suspension and load area for the strain of constant heavy payloads, and read the service history closely, since a van's high mileage makes documented maintenance more important, not less.

A small van is a business asset, and the cost of one off the road is more than the repair bill alone. Before you buy, have the van inspected on site, and we will check the particulate filter, the clutch and the load area for the wear of a working life, then report it all in plain English.

Because the particulate filter is the defining fault on a city-driven van, it is worth understanding it — see Honest John's diesel particulate filter guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common fault on a used small van?

A clogged diesel particulate filter, because these vans spend their lives on short city delivery routes that never let the filter complete its regeneration. We scan the soot load and regeneration history and check for warning lights, alongside the clutch and flywheel. It is all part of giving you an honest, documented basis for the decision.

Are ex-business vans worth buying?

They can be, if the service history is complete. A van that has covered high city mileage but been serviced on time is often a sound, cheap workhorse, whereas a patchy record on a hard-worked van is a warning. The inspection reads the history against the van's condition.

Why do van clutches wear out early?

Constant stop-start driving under load wears the clutch and dual-mass flywheel faster than any other use, which is exactly the life a delivery van leads. We listen for the flywheel rattle at idle and feel for clutch judder on pull-away to assess them. We would rather you walked away from the wrong car than regretted a good-looking one.

Do you inspect vans on site in Budapest?

Yes. Every van in this guide can be inspected on site across Budapest by an English-speaking inspector, with the particulate filter, clutch and load area checked and your report written in English. Either way, you end up knowing exactly what you are buying before any money changes hands.

Is a used car check worth arranging in a case like this?

Yes — this is exactly the kind of risk a used car check is designed to catch. Our inspector goes over the car on site, documents what they find with photos, and explains every point to you in plain English. You then decide with the evidence in front of you rather than the seller's word.
