It is also, fortunately, one of the more checkable faults, because a failing gasket leaves a recognisable trail of symptoms and can be confirmed with straightforward tests. Knowing those signs is one of the most valuable things a used-car buyer can carry into a viewing.

A leak from a cylinder into the coolant gives continuous white, sweet-smelling exhaust smoke that does not clear once the engine is warm, an over-pressurised cooling system, and bubbling in the expansion tank as combustion gas is forced into the coolant. A leak between the coolant and the oil gives a white, frothy mayonnaise-like emulsion under the oil filler cap and on the dipstick, with the oil turning milky.

Other tell-tales include unexplained coolant loss with no external leak, because the coolant is going into the combustion chamber or the oil rather than onto the ground; overheating, which is both a cause and a consequence; and a misfire or rough running when the gasket has failed between two cylinders and can no longer hold compression. Any one of these warrants a closer look; together they make a strong case.

Which engines are more prone, and why it is costly

Susceptibility varies by engine. Some designs are well known for it — the Subaru boxer engines are a commonly cited example, often around 150,000 to 240,000 kilometres — and highly stressed turbocharged petrols and any engine that has been allowed to overheat are also more at risk. We treat such model-specific reputations as a reason to check carefully rather than a verdict, since a well-maintained example of a prone engine can be perfectly sound.

The repair is costly because the cylinder head must come off, which means stripping the top of the engine, checking and often machining the head for warpage caused by the overheating, and reassembling with new gaskets, bolts and fluids. Consequential damage — a warped head, contaminated oil, bearing wear — can push the bill close to the value of an older car, which is exactly why a confirmed failure usually means choosing a different car.

Alongside those, a compression or cylinder leak-down test can reveal a breach by showing air escaping into the coolant or shared between two cylinders.
