Suspension, Steering and Alignment Checks on a Used Car
Knocks over bumps, a car that pulls to one side, uneven tyre wear — the suspension and steering reveal both wear and past accidents. Here is what an inspection looks for.

The suspension and steering do more than make a car comfortable — they keep its tyres in proper contact with the road, which is the foundation of both safety and handling. They are also among the most revealing systems to inspect, because they wear in predictable ways and, crucially, they often carry the evidence of a past accident that the bodywork has been repaired to conceal. A buyer who knows what to feel for, and where to look, can learn a great deal about a car's real history from how it rides and steers.
This guide sets out the checks an inspection makes across the dampers, bushes, joints, bearings, steering and springs, and how poor wheel alignment and prior collision damage announce themselves. Many of these symptoms are subtle on a short, gentle drive, which is exactly why they reward a deliberate, hands-on assessment rather than a quick look around the car.
Shock absorbers and dampers
The dampers control how the car settles after a bump, and worn ones make it float and wallow. The simple bounce test still works: push down hard on one corner and release, and a healthy damper lets the car settle after roughly a single rebound, whereas a worn one keeps bouncing two or more times. We also look for an oily film or streaks down the body of the damper or strut, which means it has lost its gas or oil and has failed.
Worn dampers leave a fingerprint on the tyres, too, in the form of cupping or scalloping — regular scalloped dips around the tread — because a tyre that is no longer held firmly skips as it rolls. That is one of several ways the suspension and the tyres tell the same story, and reading them together makes the conclusion far more reliable than either alone.

Bushes, ball joints and track-rod ends
The rubber bushes and the ball joints that locate the suspension and steering wear with age and use, and they announce themselves through knocks and clunks over bumps and a vague, imprecise feel. An intermittent knock that changes with steering input points toward the bushes or the anti-roll-bar links, while a consistent thump on every bump points more toward the dampers. We grip and twist the control arms and stabiliser links to feel for free play in the joints, and we examine the rubber bushes and dust covers, since perished, split or oil-contaminated rubber means renewal.
The strut-top mounts deserve their own check, because a worn one transmits noise and upsets the steering. With the front of the car bounced, the rubber bush at the centre of the top mount should barely move; visible flexing there is a sign it is worn. None of these parts is ruinously expensive on its own, but several together add up, and a car that knocks over every bump is telling you it has been neglected.
Wheel bearings and anti-roll bars
A worn wheel bearing produces a droning hum or whine that rises with road speed and typically changes as the car corners and the load shifts from one side to the other. With the wheel raised, we rock it top and bottom to feel for play and spin it to listen for roughness or rumble. A bearing left to worsen can eventually seize, so it is a check worth making carefully.
The anti-roll bar links and bushes are a common and inexpensive wear item that gives a knocking or rattling specifically over uneven surfaces and as the body rolls through corners. They are a frequent roadworthiness-test failure, and while the repair is cheap, the noise is a useful sign of how much hard use the suspension has seen.
Steering and power assistance
We check the steering for free play — movement at the rim before the wheels begin to respond — which can indicate wear in the track-rod ends, the rack or the column joints. The type of power assistance then guides the rest of the check. A hydraulic system uses a belt-driven pump and fluid, so we look for leaks at the pump, hoses and rack and listen for a whine that worsens at full lock or when cold, since the fluid thickens and the seals suffer in freezing conditions.
An electric power-steering system has no fluid, so its faults are electrical: a warning light, an intermittent loss of assistance, or a whining or grinding motor. Moisture and road salt can corrode the connectors and undercarriage sensors these systems rely on, which is a particular concern on cars that have seen several Hungarian winters. We confirm the assistance is consistent through the full range of lock and that no related fault codes are stored.
Alignment, accident damage and coil springs
Poor wheel alignment shows itself when the car pulls to one side on a straight, flat road, when the steering wheel sits crooked while driving straight, or as uneven tyre wear on one edge. Sometimes the cause is simple kerb damage; sometimes it is more serious. A car that cannot be aligned to specification, or that wears its tyres asymmetrically front to back, can have bent suspension or a subframe disturbed by an impact — which is why alignment ties directly to the search for past accident damage.
We look for the structural signs alongside it: uneven panel gaps, doors or a bonnet that no longer line up, fresh underseal or paint overspray on the suspension turrets and chassis legs, and any sign of cutting or re-welding. Finally, in salt-using regions, corroded coil springs are common and dangerous — salt eats the spring until it snaps, often at the lower coil. A fractured spring, a sagging corner or a knock over bumps from a broken spring is an immediate failure, and one that can shred a tyre if left.
