Why it degrades
The belt is in constant contact with hot engine oil and combustion by-products, and that is what undoes it. Fuel dilution is a key driver: modern petrol contains bioethanol, and a little unburnt fuel washes past the rings into the oil, where ethanol-derived acids attack the belt material. Long-life, low-additive oils and extended drain intervals make it worse. As the belt deteriorates it softens, cracks and sheds microscopic rubber particles into the oil.
That debris is the real danger. It migrates to the oil-pump pickup strainer and clogs it, collapsing oil pressure, and oil starvation then destroys the bearings and turbo within seconds — a catastrophic failure that commonly costs several thousand to repair and can write off an older car. It is precisely because the failure is so sudden and so expensive that the wet belt deserves a buyer's attention.
Correct oil, shortened intervals and the symptoms
Two things protect a wet-belt engine: using exactly the manufacturer-specified oil and replacing the belt well before any original lifetime figure. The wrong oil accelerates the belt's breakdown, and the original long intervals have proved optimistic. Ford has progressively cut its EcoBoost guidance, and real-world failures are seen far earlier than the original figures, sometimes well under 100,000 kilometres. Stellantis, from 2024, introduced an extended warranty covering parts and labour on previous-generation PureTech engines for premature belt degradation and oil consumption, and a compensation scheme for owners who had already paid — and moved its newer engine to a chain.
