The question that decides whether a used hybrid keeps that promise is the health of its high-voltage battery, the one component that is both expensive to replace and impossible to judge from the driver's seat. Measure it properly and a used hybrid becomes one of the most sensible purchases on the market.

The checks that matter most on a used hybrid
The first and most important check is the traction battery's state of health, read directly through the car's diagnostics. We compare what the pack retains against what the model should hold for its age and mileage, look at how it is balanced across its cells where the data allows, and check for stored faults in the thermal and charging systems. This single measurement tells you more about a used hybrid's value than any test drive.
The second is an unexpected one: the brakes. Because regenerative braking does much of the slowing, the friction brakes on a hybrid are used lightly and last for years — but on a car driven mostly in town the rear discs and calipers can corrode or seize from underuse. We check for sticking calipers and rusted discs as carefully as for thin pads. On the Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq we add a dual-clutch gearbox check, since those hybrids use a DCT rather than the usual hybrid transmission.
What about plug-in hybrids?
A plug-in hybrid adds a larger battery and real electric-only range, which can transform running costs for a driver who charges regularly and keeps trips short. The catch on the used market is that not every owner actually plugged in. A plug-in that was rarely charged has been carrying a heavy battery as dead weight, with poor economy to show for it, and its electric side may be under-exercised.
For that reason, the used-PHEV check adds one item to the hybrid list: we confirm the electric-only range the car still achieves, which is a useful proxy for the pack's health, and we look for evidence that it was charged and used as intended. A healthy, regularly charged plug-in can be excellent; an uncharged one is simply a heavy, thirsty hybrid.
