The battery and charging system are easy to take for granted until a car will not start, but on a modern vehicle they are more involved than they once were, and a used buyer benefits from understanding them. Stop-start technology and the electrical demands of today's cars put far more strain on the battery than a simple starting duty, and the wrong battery, or one that has not been set up correctly, causes problems of its own. A few quick checks reveal a great deal about a car's electrical health.

This guide explains the battery types found on modern cars, why stop-start is so demanding, the symptoms of a tired battery or a charging fault, why the correct battery type and coding matter, and what an inspection checks. None of it is difficult, but it is the kind of thing that is easy to overlook in a viewing and frustrating to discover afterwards.

Battery types and start-stop

There are three main types on the road. A conventional lead-acid battery handles starting, lighting and ignition and is fine on cars without stop-start. An EFB, or enhanced flooded battery, is a reinforced design with greater cyclic endurance for entry-level stop-start systems. An AGM, or absorbed glass mat battery, holds its electrolyte in glass-mat separators and offers the highest durability and charge acceptance, used in higher-specification stop-start and brake-energy-recovery cars.

Stop-start is demanding because it restarts the engine many times per journey and runs the car's accessories from the battery while the engine is off, so the battery is repeatedly deep-cycled — far harder duty than simple starting. EFB and AGM batteries are designed for this, and fitting a plain lead-acid battery to a stop-start car will see it fail prematurely, which is one of the first things we check.

Symptoms of a tired battery or charging fault

A tired battery shows itself through slow or lazy cranking, especially on a cold morning, and often through the stop-start function being disabled — the car protects its ability to start by switching stop-start off as the battery weakens, which makes it a useful early warning. Dim or flickering lights and a battery or charging warning light point the same way, as does a car that needs repeated jump-starts or goes flat after standing.

Charging faults have their own signs. A failing alternator can give a high-pitched whine that rises with engine speed, often from failing diodes, and can undercharge, leaving the battery light on and the battery slowly draining, or overcharge, which boils the electrolyte, swells the battery and can blow bulbs and fuses with a hot, burning smell. A healthy alternator typically holds roughly 13.5 to 14.7 volts at the battery with the engine running.

Why the right battery and coding matter

Many stop-start cars use an intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal that reports the battery's state of charge and health to the charging system, so the car can adjust the alternator's output. When the battery is replaced it must be the correct type — like-for-like AGM or EFB — and on many cars the new battery has to be registered, or coded, to the car so the charging strategy resets to a fresh battery.

If a new battery is the wrong type or is not coded, the consequences are real: it can be over- or under-charged, fail early, disable the stop-start system and trigger warning lights. So a recently fitted battery is not automatically good news; we check that the correct type is fitted and that the stop-start system works, because a disabled system on a car with a new battery often means the coding was skipped.

What an inspector checks

We carry out a battery health test with a conductance or load tester suited to AGM and EFB batteries, assessing the state of charge and the cranking capacity rather than just whether the car starts on the day. We then check the charging system, measuring the alternator's output voltage at idle and under load and listening for the excessive electrical ripple that signals failing diodes.

Finally we confirm that the correct battery type is fitted for the car and that the stop-start system engages when conditions allow, since a disabled system is so often the first sign of a weak battery or a charging or coding issue. Together these checks reveal whether the car's electrical foundation is sound or whether a battery or alternator bill is on its way.
